Kennington Chemical Dependency Program
Address:
3232 Lay Springs Rd Gadsden, AL 35904
Driving Directions Kennington Chemical Dependency Program provides residential treatment for males between the ages of 13 and 18. The length of stay is approximately 90 days, depending on progress in treatment. The program is located on just over 72 acres of land on The Bridge - Gadsden campus in Etowah County, Alabama. Three distinct programs share the facilities, administrative and support staff services of the campus.
The program is named in honor and memory of Bob Kennington, a former counselor for The Bridge. Positive Bob, as he was known to all who knew him, impacted the lives of thousands of addicted individuals through The Bridge and his very successful career with CD programs in correctional settings. The therapeutic model at Kennington combines several key components, including the Transtheoretical Model of Change, Motivational Interviewing, and Interactive Journaling. Participants at Kennington use an interactive journaling tool called the KIDS Journal Series, created by the The Change Companies. KIDS stands for Keep it Direct and Simple, and the fifteen journals in the series explore issues specific to adolescents in chemical dependency and behavioral health treatment programs.
Clients have 1 to 2 individual therapy sessions each week, and a minimum of 14 hours of group therapy each week. They also participate in at least one family counseling session per week. Clients are offered at least 10 hours per week of recreational activities, as well as adventure therapy.
Kennington helps its clients succeed academically through its self-contained education program, offered through the Attalla City School System. Each client's individual educational background and needs are assessed, and an appropriate program is designed that may include work toward a high school diploma or a GED, vocational interest inventories, job skills awareness, and life skills training. The program also provides comprehensive medical services on campus.
Kennington case managers maintain contact with each client for a full year after discharge. We work with partners throughout the state to provide transitional services. If a client relapses, we offer the Second Chance program. Kennington is licensed by the Alabama Department of Youth Services. The program has 24 certified beds serving clients throughout Alabama.
